Learn with Mallow: Little Discoveries, Everyday Adventures

How many cushions make a bear-sized den? What colours can we spot on a walk? And what might happen next in our favourite story?

Learning doesn’t always need a worksheet or a carefully planned activity. Sometimes it begins with a question, a little curiosity and a friendly bear along for the adventure.

Here are some simple ways to bring a “Learn with Mallow” moment into your day. Invite your child’s favourite teddy to join in, follow their interests and see what you discover together.

Count your way to a teddy bear picnic

Set a blanket on the floor and invite a few cuddly guests. How many bears are coming? How many plates will you need? Count each place together as you set it out.

Try asking, “Another bear has arrived. What do we need now?” Let your child work it out by moving the plates and toys around. There’s no rush to get an answer. The fun is in trying things together.

Go on a colour hunt

Choose a colour and help your bear find it around the room. Perhaps there’s a yellow cushion, a yellow picture in a book or a yellow sock peeking out of the washing basket.

Younger children might enjoy pointing or bringing you an object. Older children could look for different shades or invent names for the colours they find. Is that woodland green or dragon green?

Give Mallow a story to tell

Begin with a little mystery: “Mallow found a tiny map under a tree. Where do you think it leads?”

Take turns adding to the adventure. Your child can speak, make a sound, act out a character or draw what happens next. If they get stuck, offer a playful choice: “Does the map lead to a picnic or a secret garden?”

You can also pause during a familiar book and wonder together about the pictures. Not every question needs a correct answer. Sometimes the most interesting part is hearing your child’s idea.

Explore shapes with a pretend home

Build a little home for a teddy using age-appropriate blocks or sturdy cardboard pieces. Look for squares, rectangles and circles as you go.

What shape could the door be? Which piece will make a roof? If the building tumbles down, you have a new question to explore: “What could we try differently?” Keep structures small and safe, and let experimenting be part of the game.

Practise kindness through make-believe

Perhaps your bear is new to the picnic, disappointed that it’s raining or unsure how to ask for a turn. Invite your child to imagine what might help.

“What could we say to make our bear feel welcome?” is a gentle place to start. Your child might offer a seat, a cuddle or a very large imaginary biscuit. Play can make room for conversations about feelings without putting your child on the spot about their own.

Let everyday routines become discoveries

You don’t have to set aside a special learning session. Match socks together, notice which container holds more bath toys or listen for different sounds on a walk. Your bear can be the curious companion who wonders aloud.

Try saying, “I wonder what will happen if…” rather than asking a stream of quiz questions. Give your child time to notice, guess and try. It’s fine to say, “I don’t know. Let’s find out together.”

Keep it playful and pressure-free

Choose activities and materials suited to your child’s age and abilities, keep small parts away from younger children and supervise as needed. Adapt each idea to how your child likes to explore, whether that’s through movement, pictures, sounds or conversation.

If their interest moves elsewhere, follow it. A counting game might turn into a bear rescue, and a colour hunt might become a dance. That doesn’t mean the activity has gone wrong. It means a new adventure has begun.

A little curiosity goes a long way

At Mallow the Friendly Bear, we love the idea of making everyday moments a little more playful. You don’t need to have every answer or plan every step. Being curious together is a lovely place to begin.

So invite a bear, ask a question and leave room for surprise. What will you and your little learner discover today?
